Abstract:
For the BC Cancer Agency (BCCA), delivering quality cancer care is not only about providing comprehensive clinical services but also continuously striving to improve the whole patient experience.
In this talk, you will learn how the CIHR Team in Operations Research for Improved Cancer Care, a research collaboration between the BC Cancer Agency and the UBC’s Sauder School of Business, has been working with the Chemotherapy Unit at the BCCA Vancouver Centre to improve the patient experience by introducing changes in the way treatment appointments are booked. These changes seek to provide the patient with appointment times well in advance of their appointment as well as reducing last minute cancellations. In addition, these changes include the implementation of advanced analytical models based on operations research that assist clerical staff in the challenging task of coordinating limited resources, and in providing nurses with balanced workloads.
This presentation will overview the project from its beginnings through the development of mathematical and computer models up to implementation. You will be able to appreciate how these improvements might be portable to other situations and how they contribute to improving patient-focused care.
