Ruben's picture

Rubén Aristizábal is an Operations Research Analyst with the CIHR Team. Currently, he is primarily working in Medical Oncology developing and implementing a chemotherapy scheduling model to improve the patient experience and increase operational efficiencies. His major contributions to the team are his applied focus as a result of his previous engineering experience, his knowledge and interest in the application of operations research techniques in health care, and his motivation to disseminate and implement the knowledge generated through research.

Rubén has a B.Sc. degree in Production Engineering and holds a Master’s of Management in Operations Research. Before joining the team, he worked in different industries, including military, glass, automobile, and construction. His latest job was assisting the Elevated Guideway Engineering department of the Canada Line project in Vancouver, B.C.

John's picture

John French is the director of clinical operations and administrator of the research program for the BCCA RT Program, Vancouver Centre. His areas of expertise include RT clinical operations and program management, quality and patient safety, staff satisfaction, and ethics. He holds a Masters degree in RT, is a Certified Health Executive (CHE) with the Canadian College of Health Service Executives, and is a Fellow of the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists. He is the Editor in Chief of the Journal of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences. Mr. French provides operational and leadership support to the team. He will also facilitate the implementation of the teams' findings into the clinical and operational environment.

Emma Liu is an Operations Research Analyst with the CIHR Team. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Finance and a Master’s of Management degree in Operations Research. Prior to joining the team, she led a facility location project in a medical diagnostic company. She is passionate about Operation Research and its applications in Health care. Her education and experience in business analytics and Operations Research will help the team in various research projects.

Claire Ma is an Operations Research Analyst with the CIHR Team. She holds Bachelor’s degrees in Statistics and in Psychology as well as a Master of Management degree in Operations Research from the University of British Columbia (UBC). Prior to joining the team, she led a nurse staffing planning project at a major health authority in BC. She is passionate about Operations Research and very interested in its applications in Health care. Her education and experience will help the team develop innovative and applied solutions to operational challenges at the BC Cancer Agency.

Travis's picture

Travis Nordin is an Operations Research Data Analyst with the CIHR Team. He brings a wide breadth of technical knowledge and knowhow to the team. Primarily he focuses on the technical aspects of the various projects that the team takes on. This includes development of the tools that the team has produced, designing databases to be used in projects, and administering the team’s back end server. Travis holds a Bachelor of Technology in Network Administration and Security from the British Columbia Institute of Technology.

Dr. Puterman is Research Director of the CHCM and Professor of Operations at the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia. His areas of expertise include using OR to model, plan and manage health care systems, and biostatistics. He is regarded as a world leader in MDP theory and application and has developed and taught a novel course in forecasting. He is a senior researcher who has collaborated widely with health care researchers and professionals and who will provide the team with leadership and insight in OR methods, biostatistics and applications.

Dr. Sauré is a Sessional Lecturer and a Research Associate at the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia. He has industry experience in mining and forestry planning, and also taught for several years at the University of Chile. His current research interests are in health care operations research; he is working with the BC Cancer Agency on a radiation therapy scheduling project as well as a couple other projects related to radiation therapy treatment delivery.

Dr. Tyldesley is a Radiation Oncologist practicing at the BC Cancer Agency and Clinical Associate Professor in Radiation Oncology at UBC. He also holds a MPA in Health Policy from Queens University. His areas of expertise include radiation oncology (genitourinary, breast); health policy and health services research and radiation oncology needs assessment. Dr. Tyldesley's experience in these areas enable him to provide strong leadership to the team in the areas of academic study and practice of radiation oncology, needs assessments, and in study design and implementation.

Vincent Chow is an Operations Research Analyst with the CIHR Team. He holds a Bachelor’s in Chemical Engineering and a Master’s of Management in Operations Research. His area of expertise includes process simulation, mathematical optimization, and complex data analysis/manipulation. Prior to joining the team, Vincent led a surgical scheduling improvement project at a major health authority and worked in the biopharmaceutical field optimizing therapeutics production. His education and experience will help the team develop innovative and applied solutions at the BC Cancer Agency.

Colleen's picture

Colleen McGahan is a Biostatistician in the Surveillance and Outcomes Unit at the BC Cancer Agency. She holds a Master's in Biometry from the UK, which is the application of statistics particularly to medicine and agriculture. She currently provides statistical support and consulting to the Surgical Oncology Network as well as clinicians/researchers throughout the BCCA. She is a Scientific member of the UBC BCCA Research Ethics Board and is the President of the Vancouver SAS User Group Executive. Her statistical career has primarily been in oncology, both in the biotech and research areas. Colleen's contribution to the team will include in depth knowledge of the BC Cancer Agency's Information System, surgical & radiation data, trial design and biostatistics.

Dr. Meza is a Post Doctoral Fellow with the Division of Mathematical Modeling at the University of British Columbia Centre for Disease Control (UBCCDC). Dr. Meza received his B.Sc. in applied mathematics from the Instituto Tecnologico Autonomo de Mexico (ITAM, Mexico City) and his Ph.D. in applied mathematics from the University of Washington in Seattle. Dr. Meza completed a 2-year postdoctoral fellowship at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center prior to joining the UBCCDC.

Research interests: Evaluate the impact of public policies on disease burden using mathematical models of the natural history of disease. In particular, cancer risk assessment using multistage carcinogenesis models. Epidemic and pandemic risk assessment using contact network epidemiology models. Stochastic modeling, applied probability, statistical inference and dynamical systems

Pablo Santibañez is an Operations Research Scientist with the CIHR team. He is an Industrial Engineer and holds a Master's of Management degree in O.R. Prior to joining BCCA, Pablo worked for Fraser Health as the lead of the analytical team that supported one of Canada's largest health care planning initiatives. His experience in the development and implementation of O.R. tools is one of his key contributions to the team.

Dr. Shechter is an Assistant Professor at the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia and a CHCM Faculty Affiliate. His areas of expertise include OR models in health care, medical decision-making, biostatistics, and HIV simulation modeling. Dr. Shechter's contribution to the team will also include leadership and execution of OR modeling.

Greg Werker is a Postdoctoral Fellow at Centre for Health Evaluation and Outcome Sciences. He has consulting experience in several manufacturing sectors including food and beverages, semiconductor, high-tech, and petrochemicals. Armed with this industry experience, Greg is now focusing his research on the Canadian health care system, and is working on projects with the BC Cancer Agency related to improving the processes involved in delivering radiation therapy treatment.
